The People's Unity Party (Hasani: Halk Birlik Partisi, abbreviated HBP), previously known as the Hasanistan Secessionist Party (Hasani: Hasanistan Separatçı Partisi, abbreviated HSP) and the Nomad Party (Hasani: Göçebe Partisi, abbreviated NP or GP), is a nationalist[3] political party in Hasanistan. It is the oldest political party in the country, having been established by Hasan Çakar to serve as the ruling party during the short-lived single-party period, and has been a part of almost all Hasani governments since the introduction of a multi-party system.
The party promotes itself as the main political force advocating for the independence of Hasanistan and its international recognition by the international community.[1][4] The ideological line of the party is nationalism, Seljukism, communitarianism and environmentalism.[3] It has generally tried to position itself as a moderate big tent movement,[citation needed] although was regarded as left-leaning in the past[2] and having become ultranationalist and radical in recent years.[5]
The current General-Secretary is the party's founder Hasan Çakar, who has generally led the party throughout its existence.
History
The party was established as the Hasanistan Secessionist Party on 2 May 2013, during the late period of the First Hasani Republic, to serve as the main political organisation for promoting international recognition of Hasanistan as well as the ruling party under a one-party system.[1] Its formation was considered to have been an attempt to establish a party of power to centralise support for Supreme Leader Hasan Çakar's rule. However, this authority was short-lived and a multi-party democracy was established in the following month.[6] Supreme Leader Çakar remained in office under the same title but now relegated to being the head of government rather than the head of state. The Secessionist Party stood Nico Fors as its candidate in country's first democratic election for the Presidency but was defeated by Tanju Çakar of the Progressive Party.[7] The party later achieved its first electoral success under the democratic system after its presidential candidate Fors was elected as Prime of Batyr in the 2013 Batyr election.[8]
The Secessionist Party was renamed as the Nomad Party and adopted a new logo as part of a rebranding on 27 March 2014, although committed to maintaining its "political ideology".[9] In the prelude to the 2014 presidential election, the party was rumoured to be considering standing a candidate (speculated to be either Supreme Leader Çakar or previous candidate Fors) and hoping for an electoral alliance with the Hasanistan Independence Party.[10] However, the party eventually did not contest the election and instead sought to position itself as the kingmaker between the Progressive and Independence parties.[11] Following Tanju Çakar's victory in the election, Hasan Çakar stood down as Supreme Leader.[12]
In late 2014, the party promised to achieve United Nations recognition of Hasanistan by 2016.[4]
Hasan Çakar announced his intention to stand as a candidate in the upcoming presidential election in 2016 on a platform of political decentralisation and direct democracy.[13] He expressed interest in engaging in negotiations with the Islamic Party for a coalition to support his candidacy[14] and announced plans to merge Hasanistan with the micronation MuhammedLand (ruled by the leader of the Islamic Party) under a new state known as Feneriye,[15] although the Islamic Part eventually stood its candidate Mohamet Ali against Çakar. Çakar won the election in a controversial landslide victory, achieving more than half of the votes but being accused of stripping Progressive Party supporters of their citizenship prior to the election.[16] Soon after his electoral victory, Çakar agreed to the annexation of Hasanistan into the Empire of Pavlov following an offer from Emperor İskender IV.[17]
Under the initial period of Pavlovian rule until October,[18] Hasanistan remained autonomous and maintained its political structure. Çakar established a government with the Independence Party and appointed Shady Morsi as the Supreme Leader.[19] Çakar established the Turkist Idealist Party in Pavlov on 23 September and the Nomad Party affiliated itself with the party.[20] On 3 November, the Nomad Party and Independence Party merged to establish a local Idealist branch in Hasanistan to maintain its political dominance within Hasanistan.[21] However, following concerns about partisanship causing instability in Pavlov and a general opposition to the democratic system from the Pavlovian leadership, political parties were banned across the Empire on 26 November.[22] This led to the dissolution of the Idealist Party and its Hasanistani branch.
Following the dissolution of the Empire of Pavlov and the re-establishment of an independent Hasanistan under a provisional government, Hasan Çakar re-established the Nomad Party in May 2017 in an effort to "protect [Hasanistan] from the dangerous politics" of other political parties.[23] Despite good performances in the polls,[24] Çakar withdrew himself as a candidate in the post-Pavlovian presidential election and instead chose to endorse Shady Morsi of the Northern League in return for the offer of being Prime Minister.[25] Following the victory of Asghar Reza of the Bogdanoff Orbital Government in the election and the subsequent political unrest, Hasan Çakar was appointed as Prime Minister and the Nomad Party supported the Reza government.[26]
Having merged with another post-Pavlovian state to establish the Expansive Realm of Khorașan on 1 August,[27] Hasanistan seceded from Khorașan after political disputes over its merger with Nedland.[28] Having effectively dissolved due to the previous political chaos, the Nomad Party was re-established on 9 November as the People's Unity Party and adopted structural reform including a central executive committee and changes to the party leadership office.[29] The party established an alliance with the Northern League known as the Unity Alliance on 25 April 2018.[30] Standing on a joint platform under the Unity Alliance with Shady Morsi as his running mate,[31] Çakar was elected unopposed in the 2018 Hasanistani presidential election.[32] After constitutional changes following a referendum which required the office of President be nonpartisan, Çakar formally cut ties with the People's Unity Party in September[33] until the end of his presidency.
Following political changes to a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary system, the People's Unity Party won a majority in Hasanistan's first legislative election on 5 February 2020.[34] Elected as deputy under the party, Çakar was appointed as Prime Minister by the Shahanshah İskender IV.[35] Following the election, the party returned to its old name (the Nomad Party) and adopted a formal ideological line of four tenets.[3] Under the Nomad government, Hasanistan joined Montescano as an autonomous dominion.[36] Ahead of a planned elections in Montescano, the Nomad Party endorsed Kristof Drakonov of the "Optimates".[37]
After a political dispute between Prime Minister Çakar and the Shahanshah led to the unilateral secession of Hasanistan and the abolition of the monarchy, many dual Montescanin-Hasanistani citizens renounced their citizenship out of opposition to the secession or pressure from the government of Montescano.[38] This weakened both the political system of Hasanistan and the ranks of the Nomad Party.[39] The party also faced defection and splinter groups, such as deputy Chase Mahoning who no longer affiliated with the Nomad Party and established the Pirate Party.[40] The party changed its name back to the People's Unity Party on 19 May 2020.[41] In the November 2020 general election, Çakar decisively won the presidential election and was elected to the Mejlis as the HBP's candidate. The party formed a grand coalition in the Mejlis and Çakar appointed Mahoning of the Pirates as the Prime Minister.[42]
