The November 2020 Hasani general election was held on 6 November 2020 to elect the President of Hasanistan and four seats in the Consultative Mejlis.[2][3] The election was held in the aftermath of a political crisis between the Hasanistani monarchy and the Prime Minister Hasan Çakar regarding a merger with Montescano, which caused the breakdown of the monarchist political system and the re-establishment of a republic.[citation needed] Having performed well in opinion polls throughout the election campaign, Naib-i-Şehinşah Hasan Çakar defeated the other candidates with a clear majority in the presidential election. Four out of six of the contesting parties won a single seat each in the legislative election and established a grand coalition with Chase Mahoning as Prime Minister.[1]

Background

Electoral system

The then-Constitution and the 2020 System of Government Act established that the electoral system for individual elections would be determined within their legal declaration document.[4] The 2020 General Election Act passed by Mejlis stipulated that the President would be elected through instant-runoff vote (IRV) and the multiple members of the Consultative Mejlis would be elected through single transferable vote (STV) in a single nationwide constituency.[2] According to the law of Hasanistan, the President would serve for two years and Consultative Mejlis members would only serve for one year upon their respective election.[4]

Hasanistani citizens over the age of 14 had the right to stand for election to government office.[4] In addition to Hasanistani citizens over the age of 13, the Mejlis approved a controversial law granting voting rights to citizens of Brennonia, Cormac and Mahuset who had permanent residency status in Hasanistan.[5]

Campaign

Çakar and People's Unity Party campaign

The People's Unity Party confirmed it would stand candidates in the election on 19 May.[7] Incumbent Hasanistani leader Hasan Çakar was the party's presidential candidate and also standing as a candidate in the Consultative Mejlis election.

Çakar stated as part of a campaign promise on 11 July to legalise polygyny (men marrying 'multiple wives and unlimited amount of concubines [sic]') to "increase our birth rates and make our population happier".[8] On 14 July, Çakar announced ten election pledges including defending Hasanistani sovereignty and neutrality, re-iterating support for legalising polygyny, establishing a national currency and universal basic income.[9] He later rescinded some of these policies on 5 August that were deemed too radical, including support for polygyny and UBI, to focus on being a candidate for promoting "national unity instead of divisiveness".[10]

On 18 August, he issued a bizarre statement calling on citizens to show support for the QAnon conspiracy theory by voting for him, saying he was a member of "Q's plan" and accused various people including Feudalist Party member Natsuki Hegro, George Soros, Barack Obama and Ashukov leader Edward Jacobs of being part of the "deep state";[11] although the seriousness of this statement was disputed.

Feudalist Party campaign

The Feudalist Party stood Natsuki Hegro, a member of the Mejlis and ambassador to the United States, as its sole candidate in the legislative election and did not contest the presidential election. In an interview with the Batyr Times published on 26 July, Hegro eloborated on his conception of feudal ideology which he described as "not technologically regressive", stated his wish to abolish democracy in favour of a monarchy (something which notably was at the time of the interview illegal) and expressed his ironic support for gay pride parades among other things.[12]

On 24 August, following a dispute with the government of Hasanistan after opposing an attempt to force through a law restricting dual citizenship, Hegro renounced his citizenship and had his candidacy by default ejected.[13] In reaction, the Hasani government declared him expelled using his support for monarchism in the previous Batyr Times interview as an excuse.[14] However, he soon after returned, the persona non grata was lifted and his candidacy for legislative office was re-instated.

Tablekitten and Moralist Party campaign

Mahoning and Pirate Party campaign

The presidential and sole Consultative Mejlis candidate for the Pirate Party is former Prime Minister Chase Mahoning. Mahoning eloborated on some of his policy proposals in an interview with the Batyr Times on 20 August 2020, advocating for "socialised" prostitution, banning money and Hasani neutrality.[15]

On 24 August, following a dispute with the government of Hasanistan after opposing an attempt to force through a law restricting dual citizenship, Mahoning lost his citizenship and had his candidacy by default ejected.[13] However, he soon after returned and his candidacy for both President and legislative office was re-instated.

Other parties and candidates

On 16 October, former President Tanju Çakar of the Progressive Party confirmed his candidacy for both the presidential and legislative elections.[16]
